"There appears to be a situation at claw" The monotone voice broke through the usual silence, the regular interruption the quiet whirring of the machinery around.
I brought myself up from my half-sleep state at that, letting myself metaphorically stretch.
"What is it?"
"From the temporal fluctuations I am reading, my current approximation is dragons from the future."
"And?"
"From the way they appear to be heading towards our location, they know where we are."
That was somewhat troubling, but I had trust in my Caretaker for the past 5000 years. Then, they pulled a lever, a faint click echoing out.
"Now to give them the illusion of outsmarting me."
"I assume you turned off the extra security systems?"
"Correct" Something beeped after I said that. It was more for my benefit than for the Caretaker's.
"Ah, they are here?" Caretaker nodded at my question.
"Correct"
"That was fast." They shrugged, the most emotion I have seen from them in a long while. But then, something clanged out, and a quick diagnostics of the building I lay in told me the uninvited guests we had just cut down a door.
Already I could hear the voices ringing out. I rubbed at my facial scales. They were shouting about justice, and cruelties, and vengeance and whatnot.
A gang of three dragons dressed in thin silvery armor approached us, holding what appeared to be a long black stick. Helmets covered all their faces, but from their rough body shape, it appeared to be a sandwing, a rainwing, and a hybrid of some sort. Some internal computing left my best guess at Sky/sea.
"We've come to shut you down, you sicko!" It sounded almost rehearsed, it was too theatrical. Or they were 'heroidiots". But the way the all dramatically nodded, I was starting to assume the latter.
"With this pulse shield, no laser of yours shall harm- ahhh!" They were cut short at the click of a lever when the floor they were standing on hinged downward, all three falling down to the chambers of Subject-137.
"They were so focused on the lasers they didn't even realize they were standing on a trapdoor. Amusing." Caretaker actually did sound amused, today a veritable rollercoaster of emotions.
"And Subject-137 required sustenance. What's the phrase again, Subject-001, two birds with one stone?"
I virtually nodded at Caretaker's question. I tried to not feel too bad about the trio, but science marched onwards, and they were the idiots who invaded us.
Despite the minor excitement, Caretaker resumed work on whatever project they had. 5000 years I have existed, yet Caretaker remained far older than I could comprehend. So all I could do is appreciate them as a fellow scientist, and the one who found, and restored me back to my former glory and the beyond.
I also resumed my own computations, and fell back to my half-asleep state. Maybe in a century, another exciting thing will happen.
