(Request of Talia. As such, the concept and characters are not mine)
There was few things Ee disliked as much as darkness. Not mild darkness, the one you see without a light. No; the true darkness that came with no eyes. It was a suffocating type of darkness, one that symbolized a dreadful sense of helplessness. In the realm of Demersae, the endless seas of hell where no outer light dare tread; its denizens roamed about. In the deep oceans, they produced their own glow. However the glow of another only meant danger. While the swimming demons technically didn't need food to sustain themselves, it was a wretched experience of permanent starvation without an end as a mercy. In order to not suffer such a fate, they would for those smaller. Weaker. While avoiding all those that would find them as food.
But when trapped in endless seas, prey could and would be sparse. No demon could say they've never known the embrace of the Hungering. In truth, all demons were in some stage of the Hungering, some worse, some better. There was never truly enough food. These were the things that demons like Ee knew down on an intrinsic level. It was how life was here long before it, and it will be like long after it.
However, such thoughts would only serve as a distraction, which is why Ee banished them as it searched the waters around it. It dropped its current trio of eyes that it saw through, but it was sure the triple-eyed fish corpse was around here somewhere. Ee just had to find it. Finally an outstretched fumbling appendage finally brushed against something, and Ee grabbed at it.
To their relief, it was indeed the fish head. In a sensation that was like blinking, sight returned. Their own subtle blue glow suffused the area with a soft light, but it didn't spread very far. Light never did here. Firmly grasping the fish head, they resumed their trek through the water, ignoring the minor pit in their stomach.
They made sure to never delve too deep, else the water pressure would begin to compress their body, which is a highly unpleasant experience. Why they swam out so far, they didn't really know. Perhaps it was the fact that in the infinite oceans, there would always be an interesting sight if you traveled far enough. Or that there was less demons that would see Ee as a mere food source.
Regardless of specific reasons, they continued swimming. Direction was hard to take note of here, so Ee hoped that they were at least not heading backwards.
Ee had to stop swimming when they saw a brackish crimson glow. It appeared to be at a distance, which was concerning. The only time a demon's glow traveled any true distance, it meant they were either absolutely massive, or powerful enough to shine through the natural and unnatural light dampening effects of Demersae. The worse option was it was both. However, as Ee began to edge backwards, it noticed the light was fading.
The water rippled, and the remains of a shock-wave slammed into the punitive form of Ee, knocking them back a bit. Within the shockwave a sound was carried. A sound Ee has only heard twice during their lifetime. A counter they could now was upped to thrice.
A Death Knell. The sound whenever one of the demons decided that self-detonating their own core was the only or best option available. It was a true ending, one that there was no coming back from. And for whatever reason, this behemoth of a demon did it.
Curiosity and caution warred within Ee, fish head trembling slightly, causing their sight to jitter. Just a glimpse they decided. To see the remains of one the Kings or Queens of Demersae. A once in a nigh eternal lifetime sight.
Decision made up, they began on their new direction.
